In 2021, most of the households in Bukittinggi City do not own their own houses but have contracts/rents.

A total of 45.89% of households occupy contracted/rental residences, while those who occupy their own homes are 35.76%, the rest are rent-free, official residences and others as much as 18.35%.

Contracted/rented housing is one of the alternatives to fulfill the housing needs for migrants who carry out activities in Bukittinggi City, for example working or attending school. One of the reasons for the large number of contract/lease ownership statuses is the purchase price of land/houses compared to neighboring districts, namely Agam Regency. So people who work in Bukittinggi City tend to buy houses outside Bukittinggi City. In addition, the City of Bukittinggi has many schools and universities which directly open many rental businesses and boarding houses for students who come from outside the City of Bukittinggi.
